What’s the restaurant where you can get hand butchered steak any size you like in Newcastle city centre? Oh yeah it’s us. It’s Bar + Block Newcastle. We opened our doors in December 2019 and have been serving up succulent steaks and delicious cocktails ever since. We’ve got a pretty nice spot too, not only are we a 2 minute walk from St James Park but we’re situated in the old co-op department store which is a Grade 2 listed building that opened in 1932. Keep an eye out for the original clock tower hands positioned on the wall within the entrance of the restaurant and the beautiful art deco stained glass windows. Treat yourself to a meal in our main restaurant or cosy up for a date night in our booths and, when the mood lighting goes down after 7pm, socialise with friends at the bar. We even host live music events throughout the year, we recommend booking to avoid disappointment. Whatever the occasion, our food and drink is always top-notch. We’re famous for our steaks, all hand cut to order and grilled to perfection by our expert chefs. We’ve also got experienced bartenders ready to shake + stir your cocktail of choice or pour you a wine or beer. There’s always something for everyone.

Our Kitchen Manager, Steve, recommends starting your meal with the crispy Salt & Pepper Squid served with lemon and garlic mayo and a wedge of lemon. Follow it up with the main event of 10oz Spiral Cut Fillet Steak, marinated in garlic and parsley for 24hrs and served with beef dripping triple cooked chips and chimichurri sauce. Perfect with a side of onion rings. And if you’ve got room for one more dish: the Triple Chocolate Brownie. Served warm with vanilla dairy ice cream and chocolate toffee sauce.
Chef’s choice home recipe
Here are Steve’s top tips to recreate the magic of our expertly cooked steak at home:
● An hour before you cook, remove the steak from the fridge and allow it to reach room temperature. Rub with oil and add a good pinch of sea salt and black pepper.
● Add your steaks to your pan or barbecue, making sure it’s really hot. Remember to turn half way through cooking so that the meat will caramelise beautifully and evenly, leaving a delicious crust.
● The cooking time will vary depending on how you like your steak cooked - 6 minutes should give you the perfect medium rare.
● Once cooked to your liking, let the steak rest for a couple of minutes before serving with the sides and steak sauce of your choice.
● If you fancy a twist, marinate overnight in blended garlic, parsley and oil to give an added flavour boost.
