With expert chefs who’ll hand cut your steak to match your appetite, and a passionate team ready to mix you up a cocktail to start your night, we’re serious about steak with none of the usual steakhouse stuffiness.
You’ll find classic cuts and more unusual dishes on our menu, so if you’re a steak lover then you’ve come to the right place. Freshly prepared and cooked to order, with a range of delicious sides so you can style your steak exactly the way you like it, we’re no ordinary steak restaurant.

Why not come and try our signature cocktail, exclusive to Durham Bar + Block and inspired by The Legend of Dun Cow (so much so, that's the name we gave it!). Local legend states that the city of Durham was founded in 995 AD by divine intervention. Local monks searching for a resting place to bury St Cuthbert met a milkmaid, who in turn was looking for her ‘Dun Cow’. The search led them to Dun Holm, the cow was found and the monks built a settlement, now the location of Durham Castle. We think it’s worth dedicating a drink to that good fortune!
Our location
Located at the heart of the city centre, you’ll find Bar + Block Durham on Freeman’s Place, close to the River Wear and just a 5 minute walk from Durham train station. We’re in the thick of things in Walkergate, with easy parking and convenient access to the Gala Theatre and Cinema, if you’re looking to take in a show. On one side, we’re close to Wharton Park, with spectacular views across the city, and less than 10 minutes walk from the historic Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral on the other side.

If you’ve got any questions, just ask away - they’re passionate and knowledgeable about steak and wine, so they’ve got the know-how to ensure your meal is just the way you like it. Our expert chefs will be busy in the kitchen, cooking steaks to order, whilst our mixologists over at the bar are shaking things up with our signature cocktails. Chef’s choice
Our chefs recommend the Dinosaur Short Rib. We take Angus beef rib that’s been matured for 30 days, slow-cook until tender and finish over charcoal for a unique, smoky flavour. Paired with our fresh homemade chimichurri and coal-cooked mini garlic potatoes, this one’s big on flavour! We recommend that you enjoy this dish with a glass of our Vistamar Matinal Merlot. Cheers!
